Life in and out of bounds: absence, emergence and resistance

For those who took part in this study, the worked upon and worked out body is central to their ‘athletic identity’ (Sparkes, 1998) and provides distinctive forms of ‘identity work’ (Collinson and Hockey, 2007). Steve, for instance attended the gym almost every day, and spent much time planning, preparing and talking about this daily routine:

most of the guys seem to assume that you can just wake up and go and play basketball without working for it, but you have to workout on your body just to make sure you get it how you want it. It’s like, you have this idea about what you want your body to be and you workout all the time to try and get it looking good. This not only makes you feel good about yourself but it makes you feel comfortable in everyday life, knowing that you’re keeping busy and doing something that makes you happy.
